Singapore's Ministry of Defense offers rewards to hackers who penetrate network systems to discover and fix security vulnerabilities.

Singaporean authorities announced on February 21 that they had offered $14,750 in rewards to hackers invited to penetrate the country's Ministry of Defense's network to find security holes, according toAFP.

The program was deployed from mid-January to early February 2018, after hackers successfully penetrated an electronic portal of the ministry.and stole personal data of about 850 military and defense officials in 2017.

According to Singapore's Ministry of Defense, of the 264 "white hat" hackers participating in the program, 34 hackers discovered 97 cybersecurity vulnerabilities, of which 35 were considered valuable.

The show's best hacker, a cybersecurity administrator at Ernst and Young Singapore nicknamed "Shivadagger," was awarded $5,000.

Singapore's cybersecurity agency chief David Koh said the country's defence ministry was increasingly at risk of being targeted by hackers from all walks of life, including rival nations, criminal organisations and even high school students.
