Leaders from the US and Chinese Ministries of Defense will hold talks on August 19th.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan began a visit to the United States on August 16 and will hold talks with his American counterpart Chuck Hagel on August 19, according to an announcement from the Pentagon.

General Chang Wanquan arrived in Hawaii on August 16th and met with Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, before traveling to Colorado to visit the Northern Command later this week.

US Defense Department spokesman Steve Warren said that Thuong will hold talks with Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on August 19.

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the two defense leaders will discuss a range of issues, including U.S.-China relations, bilateral military relations, and regional issues.

According to AFP, the topics of the talks are likely to include North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, and territorial disputes between China and its neighbors in the South China Sea and East China Sea.

US concerns about Chinese cyber espionage are also expected to be raised at the meeting.

The meeting between Mr. Chang and Mr. Hagel will “allow the two leaders an opportunity to frankly exchange views on a range of issues in U.S.-China relations,” according to a U.S. defense official.
