Michelle Schroeder-Gardner and her husband quit their full-time jobs in 2013 to travel North America and write a financial advice blog. They now bring in more than $100,000 a month.

After receiving two bachelor's degrees and a master's degree in finance, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner was saddled with $38,000 in student loan debt.

She managed to pay off the debt in just seven months, largely thanks to one key strategy: making money giving financial advice through her blog.

Accordingly, Schroeder-Gardner, who earned $50,000 a year as a financial analyst right out of college, earned the same amount of money she spent on buying goods and taking surveys every day.

“I paid out of pocket for the items I bought to take surveys, and then I made my main source of income from posting those results on my blog,” Schroeder-Gardner shares.

However, when she started her blog called “Making Sense of Cents” in 2011, she never intended to make money from it.

“I just think of this blog as a journal. It's all a way to track my own financial progress so I can pay off my student loans,” the 28-year-old tells CNBC Make It.

“It took me about six months to make my first $100 from the blog, but once I realized I could make money from this, the blog grew really fast,” she continued.

Besides, outside of my main job, Schroeder-Gardner says: “I can write my blog whenever I want. When I wake up early in the morning, stay up late, when I eat lunch at the office, and I even use my days off to focus on blogging.”

And by 2013, she was earning an additional $10,000 a month from her blog. The extra income helped her pay off her student loans and eventually quit her full-time job as a financial expert to blog full-time.

Schroeder-Gardner has been blogging full-time since October 2013, when she quit her full-time job. In 2016 alone, she earned nearly $1 million, and now regularly earns over $100,000 a month.

Specifically, according to CNBC, there are three main ways her blog makes money. First is affiliate marketing, the majority of her income comes from this category, earning her about $50,000/month.

Along with that is her affiliate marketing course, where she teaches people how to make money online, which helps her earn between $40,000 and $50,000 a month. In addition, there is the advertising section, which includes sponsored ads with companies and display ads. This generates around $12,000 to $23,000 a month.

It is worth mentioning that although she earns a lot of money, she and her husband still live frugally.

“We save and invest more than 85 percent of what we make each month,” she tells CNBC Make It. They sold their Missouri home in 2015 and have been traveling across North America in their RV ever since.

Normally, the couple would work for about two hours in the morning, then spend the day together experiencing, walking or taking their two dogs for a walk, and then work for a few hours in the evening, CNBC added./.
