At a press conference in Paris, Air France CEO Frederic Gagey said the bomb scare was a false alarm and there was no danger on the flight. “There is no evidence to date that there was a security breach on the island of Mauritius,” he said. The suspicious object found on the flight “included cardboard, paper and a kitchen timer.”

Flight AF 463, carrying 459 passengers and 14 crew members, departed Mauritius at 9:00 p.m. local time on December 19 and was scheduled to land at Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport at 5:50 a.m. on December 20. However, after reports of a suspected bomb being found in the toilet, the Air France plane was forced to land at Mombasa International Airport, near the east coast of Kenya, at 0:37 a.m. All passengers were evacuated immediately. The suspicious object was analyzed by “explosives experts from the navy and the Criminal Investigation Department.”

Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery immediately arrived in Mombasa and asked police to question some of the passengers on the flight. Mr. Nkaissery said this was an international case and that the parties were working with the Mauritian authorities to find out the passenger list.
