Asian Football Confederation General Secretary sends congratulatory letter to Vietnam U23 team

The 2020 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers have concluded after just 6 days of competition. Despite having little time to prepare for the tournament, Vietnam U23 team still defeated Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand to take the top spot in Group K with a perfect score. The impressive achievements of Coach Park Hang-seo and his team have received praise from AFC General Secretary Dato' Windsor John.

In the letter, AFC General Secretary Dato' Windsor John sent his congratulations to VFF President Le Khanh Hai, the coaching staff and the U23 Vietnam players. Excerpt from the letter from the Asian Football Confederation leader:

"The performance of the U23 Vietnam players in the group stage matches was excellent. Personally, I am confident that this talented group of young players will write a new page for Asian football in the future; I wish the U23 Vietnam team good luck and the best results."

Vietnamese football faces punishment

During the recent 4-0 victory over U23 Thailand, Vietnamese fans set off flares in the stands. Due to the failure to ensure this security situation, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) will likely receive a penalty from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The penalty for Vietnamese football could be banning fans from the stadium or, more seriously, the Vietnamese team will have to play at neutral venues in the next tournaments.

This is not the first time Vietnamese football has had trouble with this issue. At the 2018 ASIAD, the AFC fined the VFF $12,500 for allowing fans to light flares during the semi-final match against U23 Korea.
