(Baonghean.vn) - Burns are a common injury, leaving severe functional, health, aesthetic, and psychological consequences. To minimize these consequences, proper first aid and treatment of burns are crucial. The safest treatment for patients depends on the type of burn.

Electric shock burns: Do not use your hands to pull the victim away directly. Turn off the circuit breaker and use a dry stick or non-conductive object to separate the electrical wire from the victim. If the patient stops breathing or their heart stops beating, leave the victim on a hard surface and perform resuscitation (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, chest compressions) until the victim breathes on their own and their heart starts beating again before taking them to the nearest medical facility.

Burns from fire or hot water: Quickly immerse the burned area in cool, clean water (15-20°C) for about 20 minutes. Cool water will help reduce the local temperature, limit microcirculation disruption, prevent deep burns, reduce pain, and avoid blister formation. Do not use excessively cold water or ice to treat burns. If the burn is on the face, use a wet cloth to cover the burn. After immersing in water, apply a clean gauze dressing to the burn and apply moderate pressure with a bandage, then transport the patient to the nearest medical facility.

Chemical burns (acid burns): Quickly remove clothing contaminated with acid from the victim, then immerse the burned area in water or rinse it with water to dilute the acid concentration. The immersion or rinsing time should be at least 20-30 minutes.

If acid gets into your eyes, bend over and blink repeatedly to rinse the acid out. If you accidentally swallow acid, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water, then gargle and drink cold milk or egg whites, and then go to the nearest medical facility for treatment.

After a burn, the victim should drink plenty of fluids, especially if they complain of thirst. Suitable options include water, fruit juice, oral rehydration solution (ORS).

Absolutely do not apply any substances such as toothpaste, snake oil, ointments, banana sap, etc., to burns immediately after they occur. Applying these things will not only fail to reduce pain but will also make it worse, potentially causing deeper damage and increasing the risk of infection.
