Lawmakers in Brazil's Senate voted 55-22 today to suspend President Dilma Rousseff and put her on trial, ending 13 years of leftist Workers' Party rule. Vice President Michel Temer will replace Rousseff, Reuters reported.
"Today, we are trying to overcome the situation by removing an irresponsible government. We have no other choice," said Senator Blairo Maggi, who could become agriculture minister in a Temer government.
According to the BBC, the trial could last 180 days. Ms Rousseff will be informed in the next few hours and hold a press conference at 10am.
Ms. Rousseff’s Workers’ Party grew out of the Brazilian labor movement and helped lift millions of people out of poverty. However, many of its leaders have since been embroiled in scandals and investigated for corruption./.
