AP photographer Burhan Ozbilici won the 2017 World Press Photo award for his photograph of the moment former Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov was assassinated in Türkiye in December 2016.

Ozbilici was attending a photo exhibition on December 19 in Ankara, Türkiye, when the shooting of Russian Ambassador Karlov occurred. While everyone was panicking and looking for shelter, Ozbilici remained calm to take the photo of a lifetime.

Commenting on the winning photo, Mary F. Calvert, a member of the jury, said: “It was a difficult decision, but we gave this photo the award because it highlights the hatred in our time. Every time we see it, we have to look at it again and again.”

“This image tells us about the bad things that are happening all over the world,” said another member of the jury, João Silva. “It reflects what is happening in the United States, the Far East, the Middle East, Syria. It shows the face of hatred.”

The 2017 World Press Photo Contest attracted 5,034 photographers from around the world. More than 80,000 works were submitted. The jury consisted of 45 photographers from 25 countries./.
