Bulgaria wants to become a gateway for Vietnamese goods to enter Europe, while Vietnam is a gateway for Bulgaria to enter the Southeast Asian market.

On the afternoon of October 18, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received Bulgarian Minister of Economy Bojidar Loukarsky on a visit and work in Vietnam.

At the reception, the Prime Minister was pleased to note that Vietnam and Bulgaria have a long-standing traditional relationship. Vietnam always appreciates Bulgaria's sentiments and support to bring benefits to the business community and people of each country.

Although economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Bulgaria has developed in recent years, the Prime Minister said that this cooperation is still modest and not commensurate with the potential and desires of both sides.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in 2015, two-way trade turnover reached 102.5 million USD, and for the first time exceeded the threshold of 100 million USD/year. By the end of August 2016, total two-way import-export turnover reached nearly 97 million USD, an increase of over 88% compared to 2015.

The Prime Minister hoped that the two sides would further strengthen economic cooperation, promote trade in goods and services as well as investment. The Vietnamese Government supports Bulgarian enterprises to do long-term business and implement effective projects in Vietnam.

For his part, Minister Bojidar Loukarsky assessed that the economic relations between Vietnam and Bulgaria are not commensurate with the potential of the two countries' relations and this is one of the reasons for his working visit to Vietnam.

Minister Bojidar Loukarsky informed the Prime Minister about the results of his talks with Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, saying that the two sides had studied and proposed many orientations to promote cooperation in the coming time.

The Minister hopes that Bulgaria will become a gateway for Vietnamese goods to penetrate the European market, just as Vietnam is a gateway for Bulgaria to enter the Southeast Asian market. The Minister believes that economic and trade relations between the two countries will develop strongly in the coming time.

Previously, on October 17, the "Vietnam-Bulgaria Business Forum" was held with the participation of Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh and Bulgarian Minister of Economy Bojidar Loukarsky and many businesses from the two countries. Here, the two sides met and discussed many opportunities for investment and business cooperation.
