The inconsistent quality of pomelos has led wholesale businesses to hesitate in accepting export orders.

Despite its considerable popularity and the annual supply of tens of thousands of tons to the market, Ben Tre green-skinned pomelo is still struggling in the domestic market. Currently, Ben Tre green-skinned pomelo is available in many countries around the world such as Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia, Hong Kong, China… And since the beginning of the year, there have been many more orders from France and Japan.

However, to date, the product is still mainly consumed domestically. The reason is that the quantity and quality of pomelos are unstable, so the main distributors do not proactively accept export orders.

Ben Tre has nearly 5,000 hectares of green-skinned pomelo, the largest in the region. Currently, Ben Tre is also promoting the idea of farmers producing in a collaborative manner, applying the same processes to stabilize both quantity and quality, and encouraging businesses to purchase the produce from farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Deputy Head of the Rural Development Sub-Department of Ben Tre province, said that in response to the fragmented and small-scale production situation, the provincial agricultural sector has reorganized production and formed cooperative groups for green pomelo cultivation. Initially, the cooperatives will adopt scientific and technical knowledge to implement proper procedures and improve product quality.
