FIFA rankings January 2013: Spain top the world, Vietnam number 1 in Southeast Asia.
According to the latest FIFA rankings, Spain remains firmly in the number one position in the world. Meanwhile, despite not being successful at the 2012 AFF Cup, the Vietnamese national team still leads Southeast Asia with a significant points difference over the chasing pack.

Compared to December 2012, the Vietnamese national team lost 9 points, dropping 3 places to 134th in the world rankings, but still remains number 1 in Southeast Asia. Most surprisingly, defending champions Singapore are ranked 154th, while Thailand dropped two places to 138th. Laos is the only team in the region to improve, rising one place to 170th.
In the Asian region, the Vietnamese national team is ranked 18th. Meanwhile, Japan continues to demonstrate its status as a "giant" on the Golden Continent, leading with 834 points. Following them is South Korea with 687 points. The teams behind them are Australia, Uzbekistan, Iran, and China.
World Cup 2014 host nation Brazil has yet to improve its ranking, languishing in 18th place. Ivory Coast is the highest-ranked African team at 14th. Defending CAN champions Zambia are at number 39.
Mexico leads the CONCACAF region at 15th place and Japan tops Asia at 21st place.
In the top 10 strongest football teams in the world, Spain still ranks first with 1606 points. The following positions are held by Germany, Argentina, Italy, Colombia, and England, respectively.
According to FIFA statistics, last month, the team with the most matches played was Oman (7 games), Syria made a significant leap (up 51 points), and Cuba made a jump of 12 places.
