Right at the entrance of the village, there is an ancient elm tree that is beautifully trimmed and is considered by the locals to be the “treasure” of the village. In particular, in the village, there are many ancient elm trees growing along the road, creating a charming landscape.

Leading us to visit the largest elm tree at the beginning of the village, Mr. La Thanh Canh, an elder in Lan 1 village, Khanh Yen Trung commune, Van Ban district (Lao Cai), said: This ancient elm tree (called Po tree by the Tay people) has been there for a long time, the oldest person in the village does not know when. When I grew up, I saw such a large elm tree, my parents themselves did not know when the elm tree had been there, how old it was, they only knew that through many ups and downs, the elm tree was still lush and standing tall on this land.

The ancient elm tree is located right at the entrance to Lan 1 village, Khanh Yen Trung commune, Van Ban district, Lao Cai province.

Talking to the elders in Lan 1 village about protecting and preserving the ancient elm trees, we learned that over the past few hundred years, the ancient elm trees have become treasures of the people here. Everyone always respects and unanimously preserves the ancient elm trees, not only to preserve the unique culture of the village but also because they are “living historical trees”, witnessing the changes of the village and hamlet.

Besides, generations of villagers are also used to sitting under an ancient banyan tree on hot summer afternoons after returning from work in the fields, while children herding buffaloes perch on trees to pick fruit to quench their thirst...

It is known that a few years ago, many bonsai hunters from the lowlands came up and saw large elm trees and immediately offered to buy them at very high prices, but no one in the village agreed to sell, including the houses with trees growing on their residential land. When the commune expanded and solidified rural roads, there were large elm trees in the middle of the road, the whole village discussed hiring an excavator to move the trees back and plant them next to the road.

Mr. Vi Van Truong, Head of Lan 1 Village, said: “In the whole commune, only my village has a rare ancient elm tree. Therefore, the village has set an unwritten convention that everyone must join hands to preserve and protect the ancient elm trees. The elm tree has brought the villagers closer together, more united, we will actively promote and mobilize people to protect the trees; preserving the trees means preserving the unique beauty of the village.”
