Singer Giang Tu has passed away.
The singer, famous for "The Purple House" and many other classic love songs from the 1960s and 1970s, passed away in the US on the afternoon of September 16th.
According to a nephew of the singer, he was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer several years ago. More than a year ago, when he returned to Vietnam, his health was still good. However, because the artist continued to perform while living in the US, his condition worsened; and in the last two or three weeks, it deteriorated significantly. His family in Vietnam received notification of his critical condition around last Saturday.

The nephew shared that Giang Tu was passionate about singing, both in Vietnam and after moving to the US. "When he was in Vietnam, whether it was a baby's first birthday party or a wedding, my uncle would always join in the fun. He just wanted to sing, he wanted people to remember him. Every time the family got together, he would record a CD and give one to each person. Even now, at 70 years old, he has never stopped singing," the singer's nephew recounted.
Giang Tu, whose real name was Nguyen Van Giang, was born in 1944 in Hai Phong. His stage name, Giang Tu, stemmed from his love of wandering and romantic life. While alive, Giang Tu shared that the two most important people who influenced his singing career were composer Y Van and singer Duy Trac.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Giang Tu was famous domestically for his sweet bolero music. In 1968, he rose to fame with "The Purple House," a composition by musician Hoai Linh. Other songs associated with Giang Tu's name include "The Journey Home at Dawn," "The Neighbor Girl," and "My Life Diary."
In early 2010, he and his family immigrated to the United States.
