On December 23, Quang Ninh Provincial Police said they were investigating a series of people having money stolen from their ATM cards.
On December 20, a bank branch in Quang Ninh received information that some customers had their ATM cards stolen. Through checking security cameras at ATMs, the bank discovered that on December 16 and 17, at an ATM in Ha Long City, a man had installed a device to steal card data. Authorities have confiscated the device.
Through inspection, about 100 customers had their card data stolen and up to now, 10 customers have had their money stolen with a total amount of over 300 million VND at ATMs in Hai Phong City.
From camera images, police discovered that this man was one of two suspects who installed a device to steal card information at a bank's ATM on September 14, then withdrew money in Son Tay, Hanoi.
According to the investigation agency, the suspect may be a foreigner using high technology to steal information from ATM card holders, frequently entering the country to operate in the northern provinces.
