(Baonghean) - Following the heavy rains and floods caused by the remnants of Typhoon No. 4, localities are focusing on overcoming the damage and actively restoring and completing the planting of winter crops.

Cong Thanh commune has a larger area of winter corn crops that were flooded compared to other communes in Yen Thanh district. In Cao Son hamlet, on the corn fields after the floods, some farmers are applying manure and replanting seeds.

According to data from the Yen Thanh District Department of Agriculture, after the recent floods, nearly 200 hectares of winter corn were affected throughout the district, mainly in the communes of Cong Thanh, My Thanh, Dai Thanh, Thinh Thanh, Minh Thanh, Hung Thanh, Tien Thanh, etc. The district directed that areas of newly sown corn that were flooded or had their seeds washed away by the rain should be replanted. Areas where the corn has developed 2-5 leaves should be replanted by raising the plants, supplementing the crop, and simultaneously intensifying care by applying NPK fertilizer and loosening the soil around the base of the plants.

This winter crop season, Dien Chau district aims to plant 4,984 hectares of corn and various vegetables. This includes 3,284 hectares of corn, 500 hectares of peanuts, and 1,200 hectares of vegetables. The guiding principle for this year's winter crop production in Dien Chau district is to ensure a secure and efficient harvest, maximizing potential and strengths to develop commodity production and create many high-value economic products.

Currently, Dien Chau district has planted 3,200 hectares of winter crops, including 1,800 hectares of corn, mainly in the communes of Dien Trung, Dien Thinh, and Dien Yen; 600 hectares of peanuts concentrated in the communes of Dien Thinh, Dien Hoa, and Dien Hung; and over 700 hectares of various vegetables. The corn and peanuts were sown on time, before September 5th. For corn grown on rice paddy land, planting will be concentrated from September 10th to 25th. Vegetable crops will be planted in nurseries, intercropped, and staggered throughout the season to ensure planting progress is on schedule this September.

The recent rains also caused 54 hectares of corn in Dien Thanh commune to be flattened. Ms. Le Thi Huong, an agricultural officer of the commune, said: After the rain, the commune focused on directing farmers to replant the crops and apply fertilizer appropriately so that the plants could grow again. Farmers have also replanted damaged vegetable crops to ensure timely planting.

Ms. Tran Thi Tai, from Hamlet 10, Dien Thanh Commune, planted 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of various vegetables this winter. Right after the storm ended, she went to the fields early to dig drainage ditches to ensure timely water drainage for peanuts and replant vegetables. According to her years of experience in winter crop cultivation, during the heavy rains and floods of the 8th lunar month, she prioritizes sowing seedlings in higher ground. She then sows seedlings on a larger scale in September and October. Thanks to adhering to this planting schedule, her family's crops are not significantly affected by each rainy and stormy season.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc, Head of the Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department, advises: For newly sown corn fields where germination is impossible due to flooding, replanting is necessary. For corn plants with 2-3 leaves or more that have fallen over, farmers should prop them up, intercropping with seedling corn in the affected areas, and simultaneously loosening the soil crust to create conditions for root development before applying potassium fertilizer. Once the corn and vegetables in general have established new roots, farmers should use foliar and root fertilizers for care.

This winter crop season is later than in previous years, so local authorities are directing farmers to actively complete the planned planting area and regularly care for the crop to ensure timely harvesting.
