US lawmakers draft resolution proposing to expel Russia from UN Security Council
(Baonghean.vn)- US lawmakers have drafted a resolution proposing to remove Russia from its permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council due to Russia's special campaign to demilitarize Ukraine, Axios news portal reported, citing the draft document.
According to this text, the parliamentarians call on the United Nations to "immediately take the necessary actions to amend Article 23UN Charter(on the composition of the Security Council) and remove the Russian Federation from its status as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council". The resolution stated that Russia's "aggression" against Ukraine and its recognition of the Donbass republics "pose a direct threat to international peace and security" and "contrary to its duties and obligations as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council".

According to the portal, the initiative to draft the resolution belongs to Claudia Tenney, a Republican, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, as well as a Democratic congressman. Several members of Congress have publicly expressed their support for the resolution.
According to the United Nations Charter, amendments to the Charter require the signatures of all Permanent Members of the Security Council. The Russian Federation has the right to veto such proposals.
