Researchers in Australia have been working tirelessly to locate the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and they believe they have located the plane.

Flight MH370, carrying 12 crew members and 227 passengers, went missing on March 8, 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Beijing (China).

Sputnik (Russia) news agency said that many people suspect that MH370 crashed into the Indian Ocean. However, the search process has cost 180 million USD so the work has been suspended until scientists can narrow down the area more specifically.

In April 2017, Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) said that through recent studies, it is possible that the area where MH370 was searched was incorrect.

“We think we know the location of MH370 fairly accurately,” said CSIRO’s David Griffin, speaking at a national maritime conference in Darwin, Australia.

Mr Griffin said the new research was based on the location and timing of a piece of debris suspected to be from MH370 that washed up on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean as well as another piece discovered in Tanzania.

“There is a strong current along the seventh arc at 35 degrees south latitude so we think MH370 went down and that current is moving northwest,” Griffin said.

The study took into account ocean currents since the time MH370 is believed to have crashed, along with satellite imagery to calculate centimetre-level ocean depths and maps of the seafloor.

However, even once the location has been pinpointed, scientists still have to consider an area of up to 25,000 square kilometers.
