Common skin problems in newborns

March 19, 2015 14:50

Newborns have incredibly soft and sensitive skin, which is why they are very susceptible to a range of skin rashes.

Rashes are a common concern for parents. The good news is that rashes are quite natural and have their own natural remedies. However, some types of rashes do require medical attention.

Diaper rash

With the widespread use of diapers today, this type of rash is becoming extremely common. If a baby's diaper isn't changed for a long time, the ammonia in the urine tends to come into contact with the skin, leading to a fungal infection.

This rash is easy to treat. Apply a small amount of zinc-containing cream to your baby's skin each time you change their diaper. This creates a barrier between the skin and the diaper, preventing ammonia from coming into contact with your baby's skin. Apply a short-term antifungal cream as directed by a dermatologist until the rash subsides.

Acne

Acne or pimples are quite common in newborns. They occur due to the effects of maternal hormones that pass through the placenta into the baby's bloodstream. They appear as small pink spots on the face. Most parents can recognize them as pimples. This type of acne usually resolves naturally within about a month and does not require medical treatment.

Toxic erythema

Despite the scary name, this is a condition that doesn't require long-term medical attention. It typically manifests as red streaks with a white spot in the center. It can occur anywhere and often affects the entire body.

The most important factors to pay attention to are the baby's overall health. If the baby has no fever, is alert and active, adapts well to the mother, eats normally, and has normal bowel functions, then there is nothing to worry about. However, if the baby stops eating, stops crying, or looks lethargic and tired, then the baby needs to be examined and evaluated by pediatric specialists.

Birthmark

This is a very common issue in newborns. Birthmarks (crane-peck marks) cause parents a great deal of anxiety. However, these marks usually disappear within a few months to several years. Wine-red birthmarks on the face may require laser treatment in adulthood for cosmetic improvement.

Eczema

Eczema is common in babies around 2-3 months old, or even a little later. It usually manifests as an itchy, red area on the cheek or chest.

These babies often have very dry skin, and it's not because either parent has eczema. This form is commonly referred to as atopic eczema. This problem tends to be a significant issue and requires regular attention.

The most important things to remember are to use gentle soaps and body moisturizers with a neutral pH. Soaps and moisturizers need to be used regularly and consistently for many years. Dermatologists may prescribe a steroid cream or short-term anti-inflammatory medication to control the condition when it flares up.

Pigmentation

A birthmark appears as a bluish-gray patch on the buttocks or lower back and can be quite large. Birthmarks are often unsightly, but aside from this, they don't cause any other problems.

Parents often mistake birthmarks for bruises and seek out dermatologists when they become unstable. But there's no need to worry too much about this; it may become smaller or disappear as the child grows older.

Skin tags

Milia are small white spots that appear on a baby's skin due to blocked oil glands beneath the skin cells. These milia do not require treatment and will improve on their own over time.

Seborrheic dermatitis

This is also an extremely common problem in infants. It looks like dandruff flakes stuck to the baby's head, but it's actually caused by a fungal infection. You can easily treat it with some antifungal shampoos or creams. Dermatologists can also prescribe appropriate medications for the baby. Seborrheic dermatitis usually clears up on its own and doesn't require long-term treatment.
