The simplest way to identify genetically modified fruits
When buying imported fruit, you will always see a small sticker with a code on it. These parameters will tell you exactly whether it is a genetically modified product or not.
The numbers printed on the small label are called PLU (Price Look Up Code) numbers in the US, used since 1990. Currently there are over 1,300 different PLU codes, but they still follow some basic principles:
If the label has only 4 digits and the number starts with “4” or “3” it means the product was grown using conventional methods using pesticides and fertilizers.
If the sticker has 5 digits and starts with the number “8”, it means that this is a GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) product.
For example, a genetically modified banana product will have the code number 84011, while a regular banana will have the code number 4011.
For example, a regular apple product will have the code 4139, while the genetically modified apple on the sticker will have the code 84139.
However, in the United States, Congress has approved that genetically modified products do not have to be labeled. Therefore, consumers who are concerned about this type of product should pay attention to foods that are not labeled because they are very likely to be genetically modified.
If the sticker has 5 digits and starts with the number “9”, it means that this is an organic product, clean soil and clean fruit/vegetable. Thus, an organically grown orange will have the code number 93107.
