The price of burning down your own house
(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of June 28, the People's Court of Quynh Luu district opened a public trial for Ho Duc Tung (1971) for the crime of "Property destruction", sentencing Tung to 12 months in prison and forcing him to compensate Ms. Ngan more than 21 million VND.
According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Quynh Luu district, at around 8:00 p.m. on April 19, 2013, Tung was home alone in Hamlet 5 (Quynh Tam commune, Quynh Luu). Due to his anger at the fact that Ms. Bui Thi Ngan (Tung's wife) had filed for divorce with the People's Court of Quynh Luu district, Tung entered the main house with 3 tiled rooms, piled up his belongings in the middle of the house and set fire to it.
Not stopping there, Tung continued to run down to the house, also carrying things and stacking them in front of the plywood cabinet, using a gas lighter to light it on fire. In a moment, the fire flared up fiercely, Tung ran out to the garden to sit, nearby people rushed to put out the fire and called the police.
Quynh Tam commune police force promptly arrived with local people to put out the fire and protect the scene. Afterwards, Quynh Luu district police investigation agency conducted an investigation of the scene and determined the property damage to be 42,500,000 VND.
At 9:00 p.m. the same day, Tung went to Quynh Tam commune police station to confess his crime. The investigation determined that the property that Tung destroyed was the joint property of Tung and Ms. Ngan. Ms. Ngan has the right to receive half of the property that Tung destroyed.
Tung was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
As soon as this trial ended, the People's Court of Quynh Luu district continued to open a divorce trial between Tung and his wife. At the trial, Ms. Ngan sadly told us: "For more than 10 years of living together, he drank all day long, drank and then slept without doing anything. When I gave him advice, he beat me up. Now that we are divorced, all three children are with me, none of them wants to acknowledge their father."
Unable to control himself, being a "disciple" of alcohol all year round, Tung lost his wife, lost his children, lost all his property and even lost his citizenship.
