On March 10, Hanoi People's Court opened the first instance trial of Nguyen The Minh (35 years old, with 4 previous convictions) for murder.
According to the prosecution, wanting to wean her son Nguyen Tuan Hoang Gia (21 months old), from November 24, 2015, Ms. Ta Huyen Trang (27 years old) left the baby from the night before until early afternoon the next day at her friend's house on Cho Kham Thien street.
Baby Gia cried for her mother late at night and was slapped and beaten with a broom handle by Minh (the landlord's boyfriend). He even bit the child's cheek and stomach, scaring the child into stopping and going to sleep. Minh said the bruises on baby Gia's body were from falling and being bitten by him, so Trang continued to send them.
On the night of December 8, 2015, Gia cried for her mother. Minh yelled at her repeatedly and slapped her three times. The next morning, the baby had difficulty breathing and was rushed to the emergency room. When transferred to the hospital due to poor health, the baby died. The forensic examination determined that the baby died from a traumatic brain injury.
Minh was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
