(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, orange growers in Nghia Hieu commune are harvesting late-ripening oranges to serve the Tet market, with the joy of a good harvest and good prices, with each hectare expected to bring in nearly 1 billion VND in income.

The orange garden of Ms. Ho Thi Ha's family in Trung Tam hamlet, Nghia Hieu commune, is harvesting for the fifth year. In previous years, due to lack of knowledge of care techniques, the orange garden was harvested within the 9th and 10th lunar months. Because it is the main orange season, the selling price is only 25-28 thousand VND/kg. In recent years, thanks to the application of science and technology, her family's 1.2 hectare orange garden has extended the harvest season to serve the Tet market.

Meanwhile, Ms. Le Thi Yen's family in Le Lai hamlet has 8 sao of land, growing 2 varieties of Xa Doai with golden heart and Valencia with late ripening. They also have oranges for sale before and after Tet, so the selling price has doubled. This year, Ms. Yen's family's orange garden has increased in productivity compared to last year, with some orange trees yielding over 300 kg of fruit.

Ms. Yen said: “Late-ripening oranges sell for about 55 to 60 thousand VND/kg - twice the price of main-season oranges, but they are still in high demand. Late-ripening orange trees are much more economically efficient than other crops.”

Growing late oranges is not difficult, however care requires diligence and a lot of effort.

According to the experience of households, planting late oranges is not difficult, however, care requires diligence and a lot of effort. In particular, the soil for planting oranges must be loose, moist enough, fertilized properly and must have drainage ditches to prevent timely flooding, avoiding erosion of the orange tree roots.

During the care process, it is also necessary to understand the pest and disease process and the leaf change process on the tree during the months of the season. If you want the oranges to have good quality and beautiful fruit, at the beginning of the season, the grower must know how to intervene in the flower and bud blooming process of the tree, grasp the techniques of pruning flowers, pruning branches, and shaping the canopy so that the oranges bloom at the right time.

Mr. Ngo Sy Binh - Chairman of Nghia Hieu Commune People's Committee said that currently, orange growers in Nghia Hieu Commune have converted and applied science and technology to produce late-ripening oranges for Tet. From 5 hectares of late-ripening oranges of these households, the commune is focusing on propagating and mobilizing orange growers in the area to strongly convert and apply science and technology so that the orange trees can ripen late and be sold during Tet, in order to increase income. The output of Xa Doai Long Vang and Valenxia orange varieties during Tet is very stable, some batches have been purchased by traders right from the beginning of the season.
