It is prohibited to bring gold bars or raw gold when entering or exiting the country.
For personal gold jewelry and gold ornaments, the total weight carried by individuals is limited to under 300g.
The State Bank of Vietnam is seeking feedback on a draft circular guiding the carrying of gold by individuals when exiting and entering the country.
Gold bars are prohibited from being carried when entering or exiting Vietnam through border checkpoints. According to the draft Circular, Vietnamese and foreign individuals entering or exiting the country with passports, travel documents, or border identity cards are not allowed to carry gold bars or raw gold.
Foreign individuals entering or exiting the country are only allowed to carry gold jewelry and gold handicrafts with a total weight of less than 300g. Any amount exceeding this limit must be declared to the Customs authorities and subject to tax according to current laws.
When entering or exiting the country using a travel permit or border identity card, Vietnamese and foreign individuals are allowed to carry gold jewelry worn on their person without having to declare it to the Customs authorities.
Foreigners permitted to reside in Vietnam are not allowed to bring gold bars upon entry. However, if they bring raw gold, gold jewelry, or gold handicrafts with a total weight of 300g or more, they must declare it to the Customs authorities and pay taxes according to current regulations.
Vietnamese citizens residing abroad are permitted to carry raw gold, gold bars, gold jewelry, and gold handicrafts with a total weight of less than 300g when departing the country. Anything exceeding 300g must be declared to the Customs authorities and taxes must be paid according to regulations.
In the case of Vietnamese individuals permitted to reside abroad who carry raw gold, gold bars, gold jewelry, or gold handicrafts with a total weight of 1kg or more, they must have a permit to carry gold when exiting the country issued by the State Bank of Vietnam branch in the province or centrally-governed city where the individual resides, and must also declare it to the Customs authorities and pay taxes according to the law.
According to regulations, permits to carry gold when leaving the country require submitting a complete set of documents directly or by mail to the State Bank of Vietnam branch in the province or centrally-governed city where the individual resides.
The draft Circular also specifically emphasizes that Vietnamese and foreign individuals are absolutely prohibited from sending gold abroad, or receiving gold sent from abroad as gifts via post, air, or sea.
