Land officials 'protect' illegal construction, hindering highway progress

Nguyen Hieu Cuong - a cadastral officer of Phuoc Tan ward, Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province - was arrested for "protecting" illegal construction projects.

Today (February 18), the Investigation Police Agency of Bien Hoa City Police, Dong Nai Province issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain Nguyen Hieu Cuong (born in 1984, cadastral officer of Phuoc Tan Ward) to investigate the act of "Taking advantage of position and power in performing official duties".

According to the investigation results, Cuong has worked at the People's Committee of Phuoc Tan Ward since 2011, holding the role of a land officer in charge of construction order. During the performance of his duties, he was found to have taken advantage of his position to "protect" illegal construction projects for personal gain.

Notably, in the past two years, when the State carried out site clearance work for the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway project through Phuoc Tan ward, authorities discovered hundreds of houses built illegally on agricultural land, inconsistent with planning.

The police continue to investigate and handle the case according to the law.
