Low wages mean many workers live in dire straits. Taking a stroll through residential areas near the North Vinh and South Cam industrial zones on a late June day, we easily encountered rows of cramped, unhealthy rental houses. In the sweltering midday heat, these rooms with brick walls and corrugated iron or cement roofs only intensified the stifling heat.
Surrounding the factories where workers are employed are scattered sidewalk markets and mobile stalls catering to the workers' needs. For them, having decent housing, basic amenities like a television, recreational spaces after work, or childcare facilities seems like a distant dream. Material hardship and spiritual poverty are the feelings anyone can get about the lives of workers today.
