Yamaha's AI concept motorcycle can balance itself and interact with the rider like a robot.
The centerpiece of Yamaha's booth at the 2018 Bangkok Motor Show is the MOTOROiD artificial intelligence motorcycle. The concept is called "strange" because it is equipped with AI, capable of self-balancing, recognizing the owner, and interacting with humans like a living object. |
MOTOROiD is the result of an effort to find a new way of operating, where the vehicle and the person become one. The project was carried out by Yamaha's Innovation Center (established in 2016). |
The car has a series of sensors around. The front part has an integrated camera “Tracking Cam” - a camera system that detects the road ahead. Images captured by this camera can serve many modern functions such as judging the quality of the road surface or performing other safety features. |
The front of the bike and the handlebars are quite interesting, they can adjust their height to suit the rider's body shape. The handlebars have a very strange design with buttons integrated on both sides of the handlebars, allowing the rider to perform certain functions. |
MOTOROiD is more like a robot than a regular motorcycle. It has a sci-fi style. Two auxiliary wheels are attached on both sides for emergency situations. At the exhibition, the technician tested the vehicle by pushing hard, the vehicle automatically calculated the force and pushed the main axle to stand firmly. |
Overall, the Yamaha MOTOROiD has a fairly neat and basic design. The vehicle is designed for one person, with many carbon details to optimize the vehicle's weight, only 213 kg. The MOTOROiD integrates the electric motor into the rear wheel hub that fits into the rear swingarm frame. |

Providing power to the electric motor that drives the rear wheels is a Lithium-ion battery pack with 6 battery blocks arranged symmetrically on both sides and exposed. |
Shock absorber located under the rear swingarm. |

The rims are designed quite specially. The front rim of the car is symmetrical 6-spoke, while the rear rim is hexagonal network structure. Special tires developed by Bridgestone with size 140/70 R17 in front and 190/55 R17 in the rear. Single disc brake in front and electronic brake mechanism in the rear. |
MOTOROiD can recognize its owner. When it recognizes the owner's face and actions, the vehicle automatically stands up, puts down the kickstand, and automatically approaches the owner. |
Once seated, the rear of the vehicle automatically retracts to hug the rider's back. A small taillight is located right at the back. Yamaha has not released technical information about the MOTOROiD. |
