Fondly nicknamed “the Beetle” by enthusiasts, the Volkswagen Beetle was produced from 1938 to 2003. By 2002, statistics showed that more than 21 million Volkswagen Beetles had been produced. However, by 2003, production had dropped to a low of 30,000 from a peak of 1.3 million in 1971. VW officially announced the end of the Volkswagen Beetle line in June 2003, citing declining market demand.
The last Volkswagen Beetle (serial number 21,529,464) rolled off the assembly line in Puebla, Mexico, on July 30, 2003, 65 years after its debut. The final car was transferred from the company's museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.
