Along a short stretch of about 500 meters beside the peanut fields by the coast in Dien Hai commune, there are already 5-6 people setting traps to catch swallows. Each person has a set of equipment consisting of: a net about 2 meters long and 1 meter wide used as a trap, a small speaker to broadcast bird songs, and about a dozen decoy birds. With just this simple equipment, each person can catch between 100 and 300 swallows a day.
A swallow hunter in Dien Hai commune said that many people in the commune are currently engaged in this profession. Roughly speaking, thousands of swallows are hunted every day. After being caught, the swallows are bought by middlemen who come directly to the hunters for 2000 dong each. Then, the swallows are plucked, grilled, and sold to restaurants for 3500-5000 dong each.

Swallows are very beneficial to humans because they eat flying insects, which are carriers of many diseases characteristic of tropical regions. Given the current situation of swallow hunting leading to their extinction, the relevant authorities in Dien Chau need to act quickly to stop this practice.
