Initially, Gutzon felt that creating a giant mountain to depict American history was too complicated, so he hesitated. Instead, he asked the government for permission to create a secret room to store documents related to American history, and was approved. However, Gutzon died before the room was completed.
The ceramic reliefs, which contain documents from important moments in American history such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and even a biography of Gutzon Borglum himself, are housed in a wooden box. All are placed in a titanium case and locked. This action is meant to be opened thousands of years from now, when people from another civilization will be able to learn about the era in which we live.
Today, visitors to Rushmore can visit this mysterious room, but it is considered a difficult place to get to because of its difficult location.
Mount Rushmore is a national memorial near Keystone, South Dakota. On the top of the mountain is a sculpture depicting the faces of four US presidents: Lincoln Borglum, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt. The entire memorial covers an area of 5.17 km2 and is 1,745 m above sea level. Although the original idea was to sculpt the four presidents from head to waist, due to lack of funds, the carving was stopped in 1941. The National Park Service began managing the memorial in 1933 while it was still under construction and continues to manage it today. It attracts about 2 million visitors each year. |
