To prepareSupplying the market for Lunar New Year 2022, Mr. Le Doan Xo's family (Dong Tam village, Thach Ngan commune, Con Cuong) has a herd of 120 pigs. Input costs such as feed and veterinary supplies have increased, but the price of pigs has been "stuck" at a low level for a long time, which makes him worried. In the past 2 weeks, the pig market has shown signs of recovery, the price of pigs has increased day by day, so he is very excited.

Mr. Le Doan Xo said: “I just sold a batch of 15 pigs for 54,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers can make a profit. The remaining 100 pigs will be sold from now until the 15th day of the first lunar month. Hopefully, by the end of the year, when food demand increases, pig prices will increase further so that farmers can make more profit and cover expenses.”

In Con Cuong, many households are also preparing to sell large quantities to the market.pigto serve the needs of consumers at the end of the year. Mr. Lo Van Ve (Mau Duc commune) said: “In addition to 10 black pigs, I also raise a herd of super lean pigs to supply the Tet market. Currently, the pigs have reached a weight of 85-90kg/head. In the past few days, traders have come to ask to buy, but I am not in a hurry to sell. I will wait until Tet, when the price increases, then I will sell them.”

Currently, the whole Con Cuong district has a total herd of 28,850 pigs, with an output of over 2,500 tons. In 2021, African swine fever continues to affect the development of the pig herd, herd restoration faces many difficulties due to lack of breeds and risks because the disease is still latent, so it greatly limits the increase of the total herd.

Ms. Lo Thi Tam - an expert of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Con Cuong district said: "To supply the market for Tet, the district has focused on controlling and suppressing African swine fever, minimizing the recurrence of the disease; at the same time, localities have actively reviewed and encouraged qualified livestock households to continue to re-herd, strengthen disease prevention and control to preserve the Tet pig herd. Currently, African swine fever has been basically controlled, with only 3 localities having not passed 21 days. The price of live pigs has increased, so farmers are very excited."

The reason for the increase in pork prices is due to the increased demand for pork for processing by people and businesses at the end of the year. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Not only household and family farms but also large-scale farms are very excited whenPig prices are on the rise.Mr. Bui Van Huynh - owner of a mixed farm in Hamlet 1, Thach Son Commune (Anh Son) has a herd of about 1,500 pigs/year. The batch of pigs sold this Tet holiday alone is approximately 300 pigs. Being proactive in breeding pigs and not depending on industrial feed, the increase in pig prices brings him a good source of profit.

“Before, when the price of pigs was low, I did not suffer losses because I had the initiative to have piglets and available food sources from agricultural by-products. With the price of pigs rising again, it has helped me have a good profit to reinvest in the barn,” said Mr. Huynh.

According to the assessmentpork supply capacity to serve Tet marketAccording to the Department of Industry and Trade's Lunar New Year 2022, the total pig herd in the province is estimated at 930,821, up 2.88% over the same period in 2020, the output of live pigs for slaughter in 2021 is estimated at 141,040 tons, up 3.36%, so the supply of pork is quite abundant during Tet. The increase in pork prices is within expectations, the reason is that increased consumption pushes up pork prices. Because this is the time when people and businesses buy pigs to make processed products for the end of the year and the first quarter, pork prices have the momentum to increase.

However, according to the assessment, due to the impact of COVID-19, people's purchasing power is somewhat lower than the same period in previous years, so price fluctuations will not have a sudden change. According to the survey, pork prices in traditional markets have started to increase slightly: pork belly increased from 100,000 VND/kg to 110,000 VND/kg; rump and shoulder increased from 95,000 VND/kg to 100,000 VND/kg; ribs increased from 110,000 VND/kg to 120,000 VND/kg...

"The increase in live pig prices to 57,000 - 60,000 VND/kg is inevitable. Because about 1 month before Tet, pork prices will increase to serve processed foods. In addition, the reopening of restaurants across the country after the period of social distancing also increases consumer demand, which also causes pork prices to increase. However, the increase in pork prices will not have many fluctuations, and will remain around 56,000 - 60,000 VND/kg.
