Newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will stick to his commitment to accept 25,000 Syrian migrants to Canada by December 31 despite backlash from some following the deadly attacks in Paris on November 13.
Immigration Minister John McCallum posted on Twitter on November 23 that people should “stay tuned” for what the government is about to do.
The announcement on November 24 will surely raise alarm bells in the United States, where several Republican governors have said they do not want to accept Syrian migrants.
Brad Wall, the leader of the Conservative Party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, said the aforementioned time-bound plan should be scrapped for security reasons.
Meanwhile, Quebec Premier Phillipe Couillard confirmed that his government has allocated the necessary funds for 3,600 migrants.
