Hackers have created and widely distributed a fraudulent "Wu Zetian photo editing" app on Facebook to steal users' accounts.

According to cybersecurity company Bkav, recently, many users in Vietnam, out of curiosity or carelessness, have accessed the "Vo Tac Thien photo editing" application on Facebook and then logged into a website that mimics the social network's interface, resulting in their accounts being compromised.

Taking advantage of the popularity of the TV series "The Legend of Wu Zetian," which has been airing on television in many countries since the end of last year, along with the "craze" for the Pitu photo editing software that capitalized on the series among users of iOS and Android mobile devices, hackers have created and widely distributed a fraudulent "Wu Zetian photo editing" application on Facebook to steal users' accounts.

According to Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Vice President in charge of Cybersecurity at Bkav Group, exploiting people's curiosity and desire for novelty, malicious actors have shared invitations on users' walls to use an application that creates "Wu Zetian-themed photos."

When users click on this fraudulent app invitation, instead of receiving assistance in editing photos to transform themselves into Empress Wu Zetian, they are lured to a website with an interface similar to Facebook, with the domain name “tienlen.zapto.org”. In reality, this is a fake Facebook website designed to steal the accounts of users of this social network.

“As more and more people participate in social networks like Facebook, new forms of exploitation will emerge, and malicious actors will constantly devise new methods and tactics to carry out their crimes. Therefore, users need to be more vigilant. In particular, users must be careful when clicking on and following any instructions online, as those instructions may lead to malware, and we ourselves may be introducing malware into our devices. One of the important factors is to equip ourselves with anti-malware software and run it constantly on our computers to provide comprehensive protection against internet threats,” said Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh.
