The Competition Management Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has just warned that laundry detergent tablets being sold widely in the Vietnamese market can be dangerous for children.

According to the Competition Management Department, recently, in many countries around the world, including Vietnam, there have appeared tablet laundry detergent products to replace traditional laundry detergent/washing powder.

This product is considered very convenient and effective because each tablet corresponds to 1 wash, consumers do not have to measure detergent for each wash. This product is increasingly used by many families.

However, laundry detergent tablets look very attractive to children, if not used and stored safely, it will lead to serious danger.

In terms of appearance, laundry detergent pods look quite similar to cakes and candies for children: small size - a 3-year-old can hold it in the palm of their hand, colorful, packaged in a transparent, round plastic bag... Therefore, children can easily mistake these for cakes and candies and risk biting or swallowing them if not supervised by adults.

Children confusing laundry detergent tablets with candy has happened in many countries around the world. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has launched a Consumer Awareness Campaign on laundry detergent tablets.

Accordingly, OECD believes that children cannot distinguish between laundry detergent tablets and candy, so adults must proactively keep laundry detergent tablets out of sight and reach of children. In addition, OECD also requires businesses that manufacture and trade products to comply with and share experiences related to product safety, and at the same time promote the safe use of laundry detergent tablets.

“Currently, businesses selling laundry detergent have not officially distributed this product in Vietnam. Consumers mainly buy through hand-carried and imported channels. Therefore, improving product safety mainly depends on consumers. In case children accidentally come into contact with the product through the mouth or skin, first aid should be given and the child should be quickly taken to the hospital for timely diagnosis and treatment,” the Competition Management Department recommended.
