According to Reuters, on September 14, the Egyptian Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that the country's police and military forces mistakenly fired on a convoy of Mexican tourists while fighting with armed elements in the western desert of Egypt, killing 12 people and injuring 10 others.
“A joint force of police and military, while pursuing terrorists in the oasis area of the Western Desert on the night of September 13, accidentally attacked four buses carrying Mexican tourists. The incident left 12 Mexicans and Egyptians dead and 10 others injured,” the statement said.
However, the statement also noted that this is an area that is off-limits to visitors.
