Will the coast guard be equipped with aircraft?

The Ministry of National Defence is developing a draft law on the Vietnam Coast Guard. According to the draft, the Coast Guard could be equipped with aircraft and operate in international waters when necessary.

One of the notable points of the draft Law on the Vietnam Coast Guard is the clearly defined scope of operations in Article 12. If necessary, for humanitarian purposes, peace, crime prevention, and combating violations of maritime law, the Vietnam Coast Guard is permitted to operate in relevant areas, in foreign waters, and in international waters, but must comply with Vietnamese law, bilateral agreements, treaties, and international law to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a party.

A new point in this draft Law is the clear definition of the responsibilities of the Ministries of National Defense, Public Security, and Foreign Affairs regarding the Vietnam Coast Guard. Accordingly, within their functions and duties, agencies under the Ministry of National Defense are responsible for assisting the Minister of National Defense in state management and comprehensively commanding and directing the Vietnam Coast Guard. The Ministry of Public Security directs its subordinate agencies and units to notify and provide necessary information and documents on national security protection, maintaining social order and safety, and other information related to the functions and duties of the Vietnam Coast Guard. It also coordinates in searching for and apprehending individuals and vehicles violating the law at the request of the Vietnam Coast Guard.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs its subordinate agencies and units to inform and provide necessary information and documents on the State's foreign policy and activities; international treaties and agreements to which Vietnam is a party that are related to the functions, tasks, and powers of the Vietnam Coast Guard. It also guides and supports the Vietnam Coast Guard in foreign affairs operations in resolving cases involving foreign elements within the functions, tasks, and powers of the Vietnam Coast Guard…

According to the draft law, the Vietnam Coast Guard is equipped with ships, boats, aircraft, and other vehicles; it is also equipped with various weapons, support tools, and professional equipment to perform its functions and duties (detailed by the Minister of National Defense).
