Mahathir, 90, Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister, made a surprise appearance at an anti-government protest in Kuala Lumpur in late August and called for a "people power" movement to oust Najib.
According to Reuters, Mahathir's spokesman Sufi Yusoff said police had gone to Mahathir's office for questioning. However, Yusof refused to provide details about the meeting.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is facing corruption charges related to the country's state investment fund 1MDB. In July, the Wall Street Journal reported that investigators had uncovered a mysterious transfer of nearly $700 million into Najib's personal bank account. However, Najib, who is currently chairman of the 1MDB advisory board, has denied the allegations.
He has fired the deputy prime minister and other officials who have publicly questioned him, and also replaced the attorney general investigating 1MDB. Authorities have also suspended two newspapers and blocked access to websites that carried articles related to 1MDB.
