This is a record number in the context of fierce public debate in the US surrounding tightening gun control.
Chicago police said that within 3 hours from 1:30 a.m. on August 5 (local time), there were 10 shootings with 30 victims, including 2 deaths.
"The city of Chicago experienced a night of violence. Some of these incidents were targeted and gang-related," said Chicago Police Department Chief Fred Waller.
Chicago has struggled with school shootings and a high homicide rate in recent years. Experts say crime tends to increase during the hot summer months. On June 25, at least 21 people were shot in the city, including two who died.
