The naked bodies of a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were found by police in a locked garage in the city of Bottrop, in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, according toMetro.
Investigators said the couple, whose identities have not been released, apparently started the car engine to keep warm during sex, which led to their deaths.
Police said no one noticed the car running for hours inside the garage’s metal gate. It wasn’t until the man’s family reported him missing for days that authorities investigated and broke down the garage door.
Meanwhile, police in the city also began a search for the woman's sudden disappearance.
With no evidence of foul play, forensic experts are working to determine exactly what happened. Investigators are conducting tests to determine the level of carbon dioxide poisoning in the couple's blood.
"Currently, all evidence suggests that this was an accident. To eliminate all suspicion, the prosecutor has ordered an autopsy," said a police representative.
