By peeling off genuine phone stickers and sticking them on fake phones, a 9X young man and his lover have appropriated more than 100 million VND from many gullible people.

On January 2, the Dong Da District Police Department prosecuted Doan Ngoc Gia and Do Thi Ngan (both from Thanh Hoa) to continue investigating and expanding the case of fraud and property appropriation.

In mid-December 2016, Mr. Phan Quoc Huy (27 years old, living in Hanoi) went to Bach Khoa Ward Police (Hai Ba Trung) to report that Doan Ngoc Gia had tricked him into selling him a Chinese mobile phone with genuine stamps.

Based on collected documents and statements from related people, Hai Ba Trung District Police urgently arrested Doan Ngoc Gia and his accomplice Do Thi Ngan. The case was then handed over to Dong Da District Police for investigation according to their authority.

Initially, the police determined that about 2 weeks ago, Gia bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone for nearly 20 million VND and a Chinese phone with a similar design for 2.2 million VND. Then, the 9X suspect took the fake Samsung Galaxy S7, put it in a genuine phone box, re-stamped it, and sold it to Mr. Huy for 13 million VND.

Seeing that it was easy to cheat and sell fake phones, Gia invited his girlfriend, who was 5 years older than him, to Hanoi to commit the crime. Using a similar trick, the couple tricked Huy into selling 4 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus phones for nearly 80 million VND.

In addition to Mr. Huy, Gia also sold 2 other phones to a young man in Hanoi. Gia was later taken to Bach Khoa Ward Police Station by the 2 buyers when they discovered that the phone had suspicious signs.

According to Doan Ngoc Gia’s testimony, he learned online how to peel off labels and nylon phone covers by hand and then stick them on fake phones. It is difficult for buyers to detect fake products because fake phones are sold with genuine boxes and components purchased from electronics centers.
