Carrick becomes Man Utd captain to replace Rooney

With 11 years playing at Old Trafford, Michael Carrick is the longest-serving player in the current Man Utd squad.

"I feel great. It's an honour to be captain of a great club like Man Utd," Carrick told MUTV. "This is my 12th year at Old Trafford. I came here at 25 and didn't think I would last this long."

Carrick was signed by Ferguson from Tottenham in 2006 to replace Roy Keane. The midfielder's contract was worth 24 million dollars, the sixth most expensive in Man Utd's history at that time. After 11 seasons, Carrick played a total of 701 matches for the "Red Devils".

"I will try to lead the young players. It's great to be captain. I came here just to play but now I've become a fan who loves Man Utd deeply. My love for the club grows every day," Carrick added.

Carrick is the seventh captain of Man Utd in the Premier League era.

The English midfielder said that even though he is captain, he will not shout and tell his teammates what to do. He will still maintain his usual gentle personality and will only speak up when necessary. Carrick believes that the most important thing for a captain is to be a role model for his teammates both on and off the field.

Carrick only played 18 Premier League games last season, but was given a one-year contract extension in May. During his 11 years at Old Trafford, Carrick won five Premier League titles, one Champions League, three League Cups and one FA Cup.
