Manar Moussa, 17, underwent a local customary female genital mutilation and collapsed while under anesthesia, dying.

The incident prompted Egyptian health authorities to close the hospital and investigate the doctor who performed the amputation on the girl. Lotfi Abdel-Sameeia, a senior health ministry official, said Manar Moussa and her twin sister underwent genital mutilation in Suez last Saturday. The sister survived, but Manar died of a sudden stroke while under anesthesia.
