Genital amputation, a young woman died
Manar Moussa, 17, underwent a local customary clitoridectomy and collapsed while under anesthesia, dying.
The incident prompted Egyptian health authorities to close the hospital and investigate the doctor who performed the amputation on the girl. Lotfi Abdel-Sameeia, a senior official at Egypt's Ministry of Health, said Manar Moussa and her twin sister underwent genital mutilation in Suez last Saturday. The sister survived, but Manar died of a sudden stroke while under anesthesia.
Authorities have decided to prosecute two doctors and the head of the medical facility where the Manar sisters went for the procedure. They are accused ofThe practice of illegal drugs caused the death of the young woman. Abdel-Sameeia added that the hospital had been repeatedly warned about the quality of its work and that it lacked an intensive care unit.
Vivian Fouad, who heads the Egyptian Ministry of Health's anti-female genital mutilation program, called the incident "a crime committed by a criminal in the name of a doctor." In 2015, a doctor was sentenced to two years in prison for mutilating a young girl, causing her death.
