Genital amputation, a young woman died
Manar Moussa, 17, underwent a local customary female genital mutilation and collapsed while under anesthesia, dying.
The incident prompted Egyptian health authorities to close the hospital and investigate the doctor who performed the amputation on the girl. According to CBS News, hThe centuries-old practice was outlawed in 2008 but remains widespread. An estimated 90% of Egyptian women have undergone some form of genital mutilation.

Lotfi Abdel-Sameeia, a senior health ministry official, said Manar Moussa and her twin sister underwent genital mutilation in Suez last Saturday. The sister survived, but Manar died of a sudden stroke while under anesthesia.
Authorities decided to prosecute two doctors and the head of the medical facility where the Manar sisters went for the procedure. They are accusedAbdel-Sameeia added that the hospital had been repeatedly warned about the quality of its work and that it lacked an intensive care unit.
Vivian Fouad, head of the Egyptian Ministry of Health's anti-female genital mutilation program, called the case a "crime committed by a criminal in the name of a doctor." In 2015, a doctor was jailed for two years for mutilating a young girl, causing her death.
