9 year old boy has kidney stones suspected to be caused by powdered milk
The boy had eight stones measuring 0.6 cm to 2 cm in diameter in his left kidney and one stone measuring 4 cm in diameter in his right kidney.
Anyone can get kidney stones, but it is rare for them to occur in a child. However, Apple Daily recently published an article about a 9-year-old boy, Xiao Fang, from Chongqing, China, who had to undergo surgery to remove 9 stones in time.
The boy’s father said Xiao had been complaining of pain on one side of his abdomen for about three months but he didn’t pay much attention. He thought it was normal because his son was an active boy who ran around all day.

Xiao Fang's father finally noticed something was wrong when the signs didn't go too far. His health was rapidly deteriorating and Xiao was getting thinner and thinner. Xiao's father quickly took him to the hospital and after an ultrasound, the doctor noticed that there were many stones of different sizes in his kidneys.
According to doctors, if Xiao's condition is not treated promptly, it could cause kidney failure and he will have to be treated for the rest of his life. Because Xiao is so young, doctors had to perform two surgeries to remove all nine stones from his kidney.
There were eight stones ranging from 0.6 cm to 2 cm in diameter in the left kidney and one larger stone, 4 cm in diameter, was removed from the right kidney. For a child, it was a really large kidney stone. The presence of the stones caused the kidney to swell due to the accumulation of urine.

Although Xiao's father knew about his son's condition, he could not understand what caused it. Doctors suspected it might be due to the milk powder Xiao drank, but they also said there could be other contributing factors.
The doctor then reminded Xiao’s parents to ensure their son had a healthy, balanced diet. He also added that children who often like to eat meat, sweets and high-calorie snacks face many health risks, especially if they do not drink enough water (not including soft drinks and fruit juices).
These tips from doctors may also be helpful to other parents. Children need to drink enough water and if parents are unsure about how to care for their children, seek medical advice.
