(Baonghean.vn) - Despite repairs and reinforcements, the horizontal and vertical beams of the Dien Kim bridge (Dien Kim commune, Dien Chau district) are now rusted, the bridge surface is riddled with cracks, and the bridge shakes under the weight of traffic. People are gambling with their lives by crossing this bridge that is on the verge of collapse!
Mr. Hoang Van Ba, Head of the Department of Industry and Trade of Dien Chau District, said: The Dien Kim Bridge was built in the 1990s, spanning the Lach Van area, and is about 250 meters long. Due to its location at the mouth of the sea, it is susceptible to saltwater intrusion, so the steel structure of the bridge has rusted. The worrying thing is that the connecting steel beams have all broken, and heavy vehicles crossing it could easily cause the bridge to collapse.
Upon observation, we noticed a large hole, approximately 1 square meter in size, at the bridge abutment. Several sections of the railing were broken and peeling, exposing the steel reinforcement. In 2010, authorities reinforced the bridge by placing gabions and wooden supports at the abutments, but this proved insufficient to save the structure. From below, the entire bridge appeared to be sagging towards the river.
Mr. Bui Thanh Xuan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Dien Kim commune, said: "The Dien Kim bridge is located on the main inter-commune road, with thousands of people crossing it daily from the communes of Dien Ngoc, Dien Bich, Dien Kim, Dien Hung, Dien Hai, and Dien Van. Since this bridge deteriorated, the socio-economic development of Dien Kim, as well as many other communes, has been affected. Specifically, infrastructure development for the commune and its people has become very difficult because trucks carrying raw materials cannot access the bridge. Not to mention, products such as seafood for export are also difficult to transport; people have to transport them in small quantities by motorbike or bicycle, going around to Dien Yen commune, more than 10 km away, to reach National Highway 1. The people of the six coastal communes are eagerly awaiting government investment to build a new bridge."
Given the situation, the People's Committee of Dien Chau District has suspended traffic across the Dien Kim bridge. However, according to observations by reporters, vehicles are still using the bridge. The risk of traffic accidents and bridge collapse could occur at any time. It is known that the Provincial People's Committee has initiated a project to build a new Dien Kim bridge. The people are eagerly awaiting the project's implementation to facilitate their travel!
