In grade 5, during an outdoor activity, a classmate teased Thao by pulling a chair when she was about to sit down, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her back. On the 5th day, her whole body began to go numb and she could no longer sit up. Her parents found out and immediately took Thao to the district medical center for examination and then transferred her to Nghe An General Hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken vertebra. She had surgery in early 2016 at Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi).

Ms. Luong Thi Minh, Thao's mother, said that the family's biggest wish now is to treat Thao so that she can continue to go to school and live a normal life like everyone else, but now the family does not know where to turn. The debt from 2016 when the family took Thao for treatment has not been paid off yet, even though Ms. Minh borrowed money everywhere, had to sell the land where she was growing acacia to get the 130 million VND for Thao's surgery. Currently, the family still owes 30 million VND.
Her eldest son also dropped out of school to work to help his parents take care of his younger siblings, but the savings from his salary only helped cover daily medical expenses and was not enough to take Thao to see a doctor and get treatment.
