First Asian player to win award at FIFA Football Gala
Malaysian winger Mohd Faiz Subri becomes the first Asian player to win an award at the FIFA Football Gala.
Faiz won the 2016 Goal of the Year award for his 40-meter free kick in the Penang-Pahang match (Malaysian Premier League). This goal received 59.5% of the votes from online fans, far surpassing the goals of Marlone (Corinthians Club, Brazil, 22.86%) and Daniuska Rodriguez (Venezuela national team, South American Women's U17 Football Championship).
When he went up to receive the award, Faiz was so embarrassed that he could not speak naturally. The 29-year-old had to look at the pre-written words on his phone to give his speech.
"Honestly, I never imagined that I would be here today and be among world-class players. I would like to thank my team, my coach, my family, my father, my mother and the fans who voted for me. Thank you very much," Faiz shared.

The Goal of the Year is the biggest award Faiz has ever won. Previously, in 2013, this winger won the Malaysian National Cup with Kelantan Club.
Faiz was once called up to the Malaysian national team, but has not had the chance to play. In the regional arena, this player scored a goal against SHB Da Nang (Vietnam) at the 2013 AFC Cup.
