Footballer Penaranda, the victim died after a "gunfight" in the city of Cali, Colombia.

While his colleagues were busy preparing for the upcoming 2018 World Cup, back home, a Colombian player unfortunately died in an accident.

Alejandro Penaranda, a 24-year-old player for the second division club Deportivo Tulua, was the unfortunate victim of a “shootout on the streets of Cali” early Friday morning. Penaranda’s teammate, Heissen Izquierdo, was also seriously injured in the shooting.

The ill-fated Penaranda died before the World Cup.

“The incident occurred at 00:40 (Cali, Colombia time) Friday, at a party attended by many football players. According to witnesses at the scene, while the party was taking place, two strange men appeared. One approached the group of players to ask about a woman. The second person then took the initiative to shoot at the players” – Cali City Police Chief, Mr. Hugo Casos said.

In the recent friendly match with Egypt, members of the Colombian team observed a minute of silence for this unfortunate player. Penaranda's death has raised alarm bells for World Cup security work. Hopefully, the host country has prepared the best plans to ensure a successful World Cup.
