The giant tree that grows on Kalaloch Beach in Olympic National Park in Washington, USA, is nicknamed the "tree of life" because of the way it sustains life with its exposed roots.

According to Amusing Planet, the tree is located near the Kalaloch campsite, on a cliff face that has eroded into a cave right at the base of the tree. The tree is supported on the ground with only a few roots, while the rest of the tree grows bare and spreads out in the open.

Even without a layer of soil to provide nutrients underneath, the tree still sprouts green leaves in the spring and is not uprooted by strong storms.

The giant tree is a Sitka spruce. Although it has no official name, it is known by many nicknames, including “the tree of life” or “the crooked tree.” The hollow cave beneath the tree was created by a small stream that eroded the soil.
