'Poverty reduction' tree in Bai Xa village
(Baonghean.vn) - In the past 3 years, the lives of people in Bai Xa village, Tam Quang commune (Tuong Duong - Nghe An) have changed significantly thanks to the promotion of intensive sugarcane cultivation, bringing quite high economic efficiency.
Mr. Vi Van Canh's family in Bai Xa village previously produced more than 1 hectare of high-yield cassava and a few acres of rice fields, but the results were not high. In the spring of 2012, when the commune decided to convert the alluvial land from growing cassava to growing sugarcane, Mr. Canh boldly registered to grow all of his family's land.
In the first crop, after deducting expenses, he earned a profit of over 10 million VND. Mr. Vi Van Canh said: “Growing sugarcane is only hard work in the first crop, the following crops only require cultivating, fertilizing, caring for and harvesting. Since planting sugarcane, my family and other households in Bai Xa have had a much higher income than growing cassava and rice.”

Sugarcane is a crop that brings high economic value to people in Bai Xa village (Tam Quang, Tuong Duong). |
Compared to other localities in the mountainous district of Tuong Duong, Bai Xa village has the largest area of flat land and Lam riverbank, with over 22 hectares. However, before 2012, the entire flat land area of the village was planted with high-yield cassava, but the income was very unstable, each year the average income was only over 20 million VND/ha, which did not help farmers reduce poverty sustainably.
In 2013, implementing the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress, Tam Quang boldly converted all the alluvial land of Bai Xa village and some neighboring villages to intensive sugarcane cultivation. However, to gain consensus from the people, it was a process of tireless advocacy by the Party Committee, the government and the village management board, in which cadres and Party members were always exemplary pioneers.

Ms. Vi Thi Ngoc - Secretary of Bai Xa village Party Cell said: "To mobilize people to participate in crop conversion, party members and vice presidents and heads of associations and organizations always take the lead in registering in advance. Besides, to implement the right season and technique, the village management board directly contacted households with high-capacity tractors to prepare the land and propagate and mobilize people to plant seeds simultaneously. Thanks to that, in 2015, sugarcane in Bai Xa village yielded much higher yields than cassava cultivation before."
Currently, in Bai Xa village, many households have a stable income of 25 - 30 million VND per year. In the 2015 sugarcane crop alone, the average yield reached 800 tons/ha, confirming that sugarcane is truly a suitable crop with high economic value, helping people in Bai Xa to overcome poverty and develop household economy.
In 2016, Tam Quang commune continues to expand the sugarcane growing area to 25 hectares. By the end of 2016, the poverty rate in Bai Xa village is expected to decrease from 40 households to 33 households.

Comrade Lo Van Ly - Secretary of the Party Committee of Tam Quang commune said: "For Tam Quang commune, the conversion to sugarcane cultivation is just the first step, so when issuing the resolution, there were many difficulties, but thanks to persistent propaganda, mobilization, and drastic direction, the people have high consensus, thanks to which people have a certain income compared to other crops."
Currently, 85% of households in Bai Xa village have solid houses and can buy modern means of living. In particular, people are very active in contributing money and labor to build new rural areas. Sugarcane is becoming a crop that helps people reduce poverty quickly and sustainably.
