The information was confirmed by director Luong Dinh Dung to VnExpress. The filmmaker, born in 1973, said he was very happy and surprised when his work was selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

“I am really happy because the achievement is not only for myself or the crew. For a long time, I have aspired to bring a Vietnamese film full of humanity to the Oscars. Now that is starting to become a reality,” he said. Regarding the film’s chances, the director expressed: “I think I and the audience have the right to expect Cha cong con to create some kind of mark.”

Father and Son revolves around the lives of a father and son who work as fishermen in the mountainous region. When the son becomes seriously ill, the father takes him to the city for treatment. The film is highly appreciated for its natural images and humane story, depicting slices of the lives of poor people as well as promoting fatherly love. This is also one of the few independent films to be widely released in Vietnam, premiering from April 5.

The film attracted attention at several international film festivals. At Tallinn Black Nights - one of the 15 largest film festivals in the world, the work was selected for the official competition round. However, at the 2016 Golden Kite, the film only received the "Excellent Feature Film" award (equivalent to third prize). At the award ceremony on April 9, the director returned the award because he felt it was unfair.

According to the rules of the “Best Foreign Language Film” award, each country will submit one film to compete. The jury will select and announce the five nominees in early 2018. In the past few weeks, several Asian countries have begun to announce their representatives for the award. South Korea has chosen the psychological film A Taxi Driver, while Thailand has chosen By the Time It Gets Dark - a work revolving around the massacre at Thammasat University in 1976. The Oscars will take place on March 4, 2018.
