Nguyen Van Luu, 25 years old, lost a leg in an accident, but he still perseveres in going to the gym and climbing mountains to improve his physical strength.

In September 2016, Van Luu from Binh Dinh province had a traffic accident and had to have his leg amputated. At first, he had to lie still. From a healthy and active young man, he lost the ability to walk and had to rely on his parents for all his daily activities.

"Family watches 24/7," he shared.

Since the accident, Luu has never complained or been pessimistic. The optimistic young man accepted the truth of the loss, surprising his family and causing them to worry that Luu would think of something stupid. "It's better to just cry" is what Luu's mother heard every day.

From the moment he knew he had to amputate his leg, Luu told himself he needed to be stronger to start over.

Five months later, Luu's health gradually stabilized, but he still had difficulty walking, felt tired and lost strength when carrying heavy loads. He decided to exercise to help his body fully recover.

The young man started with light exercises such as walking and push-ups. Then, Luu decided to wear a prosthetic leg and go to the gym to work out. The young man regularly works out for one to two hours every afternoon.

In the early days, Luu focused on light exercises, sitting in one place and not moving. He always warmed up thoroughly before exercising to limit injuries and avoid overexertion. His favorite exercises were chest press, shoulder press, and squat. He would exercise for 15 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, and not do heavy exercises.

For left leg exercises, he often takes off his prosthetic leg and exercises directly on his disabled leg. He even uses a hook to pull on his leg to do weight training. For right leg exercises, Luu puts on his prosthetic leg to support himself and help him walk more easily.

"The prosthetic leg is a lifelong companion," said Luu.

With the support of the coach and the help of everyone, Luu can now practice by himself. He practices both legs evenly to help reduce pain, especially on days when the weather changes.

In addition, Luu also follows a healthy diet, eating lots of green vegetables and fruits. He eats three meals a day, with enough nutrients to have the energy to move around and be active.

After 2 years, the 1.7 m tall guy gained more than 10 kg, weighing 70 kg thanks to training. Luu eats more, sleeps well and is no longer self-conscious about his disability.

"If I stop practicing now, I'll be stuck in bed forever," Luu said with a laugh.

Luu also has a hobby of conquering pagodas in Vietnam. Luu continues to climb many other mountains such as Cam Mountain in An Giang, Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh, Huong Pagoda in Hanoi... on his prosthetic leg.

He said that climbing is also an effective leg exercise that helps him relax. Although he has to climb with a prosthetic leg and a cane, he never gives up halfway.

Sharing his future plans, the young man affirmed that he will continue to exercise to stay healthy and live better. "Having health is having everything", he hopes to be able to inspire and share his determination to more people in life.
